CHANGING TENTS - rehearsals for a changing world @ BURNING ICE Festival >>>

17>23/01 – KAAITHEATER : Akenkaai 2 quai des Péniches, 1000 Brussels

Located between the KBC Bank and the Kaaitheatre on the quai des Péniches, six tents and a car together formed a temporary zone for social and economic change. A group of artists had been invited by Radical_Hope * to set up this out-of-the-ordinary “camp”. On Monday January 17 everyone was welcome to come and learn to erect the hexayurts. A hexayurt is a special kind of tent, designed by Vinay Gupta as incredibly cheap shelter for those in need. People could stay and get involved in the week-long process of action that aimed to generate ideas : ideas about new ways of organising work, urban food production, alternative energy management, innovative financing schemes and so on.
Changing Tents was a 7-day-world consisting out of six tents and one vehicle !
the Performing Tent for changing ideas
the Co-Working Tent for changing business
the Currency Tent for changing systems
the Biography Tent for changing facts
the Kitchen Tent for changing products
the Fashion Tent for changing bodies
a Demobilised Car for changing problems ...
People were invited to programme, curate, squat, take-over, visit the Changing Tents and use them for their own purposes.

They could  send an e-mail to radical_hope or pass by the tents ! There was NO deadline.

THE ROBIN HOOD INVESTMENT FUND FOR THE PRECARIAT

PERFORMANCE TENT : 11am

[Workshop]

The idea and operation of the Robin Hood is based on quite intense analysis of functioning of the financial economy, biopolitical economy, semiocapital and its relationship with the problem of organization (its inoperability, let’s say). We don’t think that changed nature of the organizational problematic has been understood really yet at all.
So what is it that people, the precariat, the cognitariat, the third estate, more and more people in the future at the mercy of semiocapital really need?

directed by Julie Pfleiderer

COLLAPSE/NOT THE END is a one week ‘lingering collapse’ conceived and performed as SMALL DAILY COLLAPSES during the week of the festival (see Changing Agenda), culminating in the choreo- graphy LEAVE on Sunday 23 January, between 13:00 and 15:00.

The ‘lingering collapse’ is a form of friction and decay, integrated into the festival. It’s a series of small shocks and errors that will test our resilience and that will be executed in a playful manner – a scherzo.
LEAVE , the closing choreography on Sunday deals with different notions of ‘leaving’: going away, exiting, evacuating, issuing, escaping, disappearing, moving on. During the week all inhabitants as well as visitors of Changing Tents are asked to tell – as if they’re looking back to the past – how a colony once situated on the Quai des Péniches, disappeared. On a basis of these ‘memories’ the individual trajectories for LEAVE will be noted and collectively performed.

HONEYSHOP

(documentary, free)

Between September and October 2010, 7 kg of honey - harvested by a colony of urban bees - were exchanged for stories of bees and honey in the HoneyShop. This honey - Le Schaerbeekois - contains the taste of Brussels and reflects the multi-floral variety offered in the parks, gardens and balconies of Schaerbeek, where these bees are living. The stories collected in the HoneyShop represent the multicultural variety of the visitors who came to trade their stories for honey.

Extracting Enthusiasm in the Age of Crisis

Performing Tent
[lecture/theater]

Bembo Davies (Bergen, Norway) explores social change: "culture first". His 1981 opera The Gods of Money dissected the inherent beliefs holding our 'economic system' in place.  His FiNGOs (fictive NGOs) the Future Protection Agency and the Institute for Non-toxic Propaganda were founded in preparation for the Rio accords.

His current research project for the Society for the Promotion of Human Rites wrestles with the dominant culture of denial that holds our political paralysis in play. He tends to be polite...

ATTENTION :
According to rumour, honourable delegates from Zoublistan will be attending the hexayurt village tomorrow evening. They will find a place to kit up, perform some musical blessings, meet the audience leaving the theatre approxo 2230 and retire to the performance yurt to absorb my Extracting Enthusiasm in the Age of Crisis.

FREE TO WORK

---> Co-working Tent

[duration : one cup of Cappuccino]

“If it wouldn’t suck there would be no need to try to make something out of it”
(from an internet discussion group)

Free to work is a café corner to exchange stories of changing works.
As a worker we are asked to be flexible. So we adapt permanently ourselves
to the work or sometimes we are able to adapt the work to us. For a
changing world, can we subvert the sentence “work makes one free” and
change in “one makes the work free”? Can we create an individual way
to approach an already existing work structure?

Work biographies become often examples and inspiration for other people.
Sometimes even life and work models. But what influences us mostly:
Peoples biographies or the models that they propose and that we can
borrow and transform?

I will invite you to a glas of wine or a cup of cappuccino if you tell me
(and my camera) a story about your changing work. Meanwhile you have
access to other visitors' stories and let yourself be manipulated by that.

ERECTING THE HEXAYURTS with Vinay Gupta
Akenkaai 2 quai des Péniches, 1000 Brussels

Vinay Gupta invented the Hexayurt as an incredibly cheap shelter for those in need. Everybody is invited to come and learn how to build a Hexayurt. Gupta also co-founded the Institute of Collapsonomics. In the evening Vinay Gupta will introduce us to the study of failing social and economic systems. How do we avoid cascading collapse ? He sees globalisation, peak oil and climate change through the lens of global poverty – “the capitalist holocaust”. While we talk about the collapse of “the world as we know it”, most people alive today are already living outside of that world.

(WOW! Contemplation)

During one hour each day from 20.30 - 21.30, there is a space set in the performing tent were you can ask a question which will be answered by the I-Ching.

The only criteria of truth for the I-Ching is the opinion of the consultant. He has to take the risk of being told the truth. According to the syncronicity principle, the text of the Hexagram corresponds to his/her psychical state.
The I-Ching wants to make people think and transform themselves in the process.

Concentrations and temporary photoElectric Digestopians
Kitchen Tent & Performing Tent

The FoAM team will work on the impact of a possible disaster scenario, where getting enough nutrients requires resilience. During the last wars or other economically stressful times many governments paid scientist to come up with highly concentrated products to remedy certain nutritional deficits and to provide energy to the body. For one entire day, the FoAM team will be preparing a vegetable based concentrate, high in anti-oxydants which will be used for making ‘Temporary photoElectric Digestopians’ (Bartaku), as well as feeding Burning Ice#4 participants on the last day of the festival, the Collapse Day.

FoAM is a transdisciplinary laboratory and a research group committed to developing a holistic culture, by actively propagating resilient cultural forms. FoAM's members include artists, gardeners, cooks, technologists, designers, writers and scientists from all walks of life.

The TOLART: a complementary currency for the arts sector

(Workshop, free !)

A complementary currency is one that exists alongside the standard euro, dollar, yen, etc. It is ‘an agreement amongst a group of people and/or enterprises to accept non-traditional currency units as a means of exchange. The currency is called complementary because it is not intended to replace the conventional currency unit, but should serve to fulfil social functions for which the official currency unit was not designed’. [Lietaer, B., Het geld van de toekomst, p. 51]

In this workshop we shall be asking whether there is any point to or future for this sort of complementary currency in the arts sector.

OUR DAILY BREAD
(film + live music | 92 Min. | € 10)

For two years the Austrian film-maker Nikolaus Geyrhalter focused his camera on the European food industry to show us what happens to our food before it reaches us. Geyrhalter deliberately does not comment, but allows the images to speak for themselves by focusing only on the monoto- nous drone of engines. What price are we willing to pay for our daily bread ?
The Antwerp band DAAU (Die Anarchistische Abend- unterhaltung) composed a soundtrack for Our Daily Bread and plays this live at the screening.

At the occasion of Changing Tents the ‘books’ will meet again to see what remains of the experience. FREE TO WORK
Co-working Tent
Agnese Cornelio

---> Co-working Tent

(theatre | in english | premiere | € 16/12)

The myth of Oedipus, who kills his father and marries his mother, is one of the most influential stories in Western culture. Oidipous, my foot is based on insights and principles completely different. Oedipus suffers from his wish to blame and restrain himself. This repressive habit of selfcondemnation, says Jan Ritsema, fuels the general feeling of depression that dominates society today. This Oedipus takes his fate into his own hands and his potential destinies are countless. Together with fifteen performers Ritsema will present a theatrical show with stylistic references to the work of Ariane Mnouchkine, The Wooster Group, Bob Wilson, William Forsythe and The Nature Theater of Oklahoma.

A lingering collapse is a notion of abrasion to be anticipated as well as integrated. A form of decay enabling resiliance and a continuation after various shocks :

A humorous composition of errors that shall be executed in a playful manner – a scherzo.

This dramaturgy is based on the graphic score of Cornelius Cardew`s “Treatise” and successively conceived during the week of the festival, taking in account ‘what appears’.  more oncollapse / NOT THE END >>>

LEAVE - second part of the movement
CHANGING TENTS
collapse / NOT THE END will culminate in the choreo- graphy LEAVE on Sunday 23 January, between 13:00 and 15:00.

LEAVE, the closing choreography on Sunday deals with different notions of ‘leaving’: going away, exiting, evacuating, issuing, escaping, disappearing, moving on..During the week all inhabitants as well as visitors of Changing Tents are asked to tell – as if they’re looking back to the past – how a colony once situa- ted on the Quai des Péniches, disappeared. On a basis of these ‘memories’ the individual trajectories for Leave will be noted and collectively performed.
