APPEAL US | 2011

APPEAL_US / II for DON'T KNOW ! Conference on Artistic Research 2011 - Brussels

APPEAL_US / I for the Amperdans Festival 2009 - Antwerp

"IT'S NOT ABOUT WHAT YOU FIND,
BUT ABOUT WHAT FINDS YOU.
AND REGARDLESS TO WHETHER YOU KNOW YET WHY."

APPEAL_US is the generating of context-specific bibliographies, 'pools of inspiration' consisting of references to works of any kind (not only books!) that one personally appreciates.

Through an invitation based process, running over a certain time and in the frame of a specific event, people are kindly asked to share 2 works that inspire them at the moment or that have served as inspiration to them for a while.

Before the event people are contacted via e-mail with an invitation to contribute as well as forward the call. During the event an installation exposes the online list in progress together with the online form for posting personal sources of inspiration and motivates visitors to contribute to the list in return of a shot of whiskey.

more background :

The experimental moment of APPEAL_US is rather the very action of deciding 'to give or give not up' 2 personal sources of inspiration and less the list resulting from this behavior. APPEAL_US is meant to intervene in small communities as well as communialities of shared discourses and / or practices.

The 'moment of hope' is situated where APPEAL_US invites to share not opinions and already processed knowledge, neither some bare references, but 'things that get to you' regardless whether you know exactly why. It's meant to be a chance for some distance to and maybe humor infront of our otherwise quiet controlled way of reasoning, discoursing, mirroring and analyzing.

Contributing to APPEAL_US is a generous gesture. Not more, but indeed also not less than that !

APPEAL_US embraces the fact that we behave according to the social context we are part of. We might look 'who goes first', 'what is already mentioned', 'who puts what on the list' and we might refuse to be identified, associated, participate and share ...

The 'thoughts' one handles while deciding whether and what to upload or not are the 'performance' of APPEAL_US, the resulting list then is just what 'we' came up with or not.

[radical_hope
is a character at work, confronting us with what art does and can(not) do. The guiding question is how from an artistic point of view a context can be touched and challenged without loosing its natural complexity. The practice of radical_hope is generating in-situ instruments for social transition and respectively tries to put into action the principle of changeability : being such that alteration is possible.][more]
