INTROVERT / Here I am but where are you ?
23 - 29 August 2010
INTROVERT is a writing ritual
coined by and for radical_hope, using the
COYOTL YOURNAL practices by Verlegt Verlag *, involving a public.
Going INTROVERT means cutting oneself off from any kind of direct communication with others for a certain period of time in order to not discuss about a 'thing' but meditate on it through a writing-process : regardless to whether one is experienced or not in writing.
To assure a detached connection between the INTROVERT person and the public, the communication is in-directed following strict rules. The idea is to produce one or more sheets of paper per day : once a day the daily page/s get faxed to a COYOTL-performer, who dedicates h/er/is time to censorizing the received information. Sh/h/e decides what of the 'written stuff' is worthwhile to fax further to the theatre or museum : there a fax-machine offers a daily output.
The visitor is provided with a set-up inviting h/er/im to read, meditate and/or react by faxing back to COYOTL, in case of interest.
The INTROVERT person has no glue about the public development and will complete the ritual by visiting the theatre or museum, having left isolation after the time agreed on.

in short :
The isolated INTROVERT person starts to ingest a selection of textual and visual materials into an editing mechanism based on copying and contaminating. The retreat serves as catalysor which brings the writer,
COYOTL and the visiting public in an detached - 'a-social' - relationship : a
daily FAX sent from an anonymous source to COYOTL is the only outcome of the work in isolation. COYOTL is editing and contaminating
or censorizing the material and faxes this further to be re-edited by
the audience.
* Verlegt Verlag (Nicolas Y Galeazzi and Joel Verwimp) investigates certain methods of not-negotiated collaboration and imagining a democratic framework without mandate and representation, COYOTL applies the principles of complicity and trafficking. Constantly performing a copy-machinery, COYOTL challenges the
functions of common knowledge-production and the social concepts attached to it.
INTROVERT was
for the first time performed as radical_hope's closing chapter at APT.
During an one
week retreat, dwelling in isolation, refusing direct communication and
negotiation with others, radical_hope wanted to overcome the pure
documentary surface of the researched practice and transform it during
a writing process. It was an attempt to articulate the personal experience behind the
facts as well as observing how experience calls for 'stories'.
It was a consistent presentation
of the mass of social interactions which pullulated in the research on "Cultural Change".
The outcome of INTROVERT will probably be EXTROVERT, a moment where what was introduced with and came out of INTROVERT will be published.
[radical_hope is a character at work, confronting us with what art does and can(not) do. The guiding question is how from an artistic point of view a context can be touched and challenged without loosing its natural complexity. The practice of radical_hope is generating in-situ instruments for social transition and respectively tries to put into action the principle of changeability : being such that alteration is possible.][more]
