DO YOU HAVE 5 MINUTES | 2009

DO YOU HAVE 5 MINUTES was a series of 5-minute-visits to the ground on rue Du Chien Marin 5, in the centre of Brussels, serving as a performative means to 'keep in mind' this contested adres.

People were invited to come for 5 minutes to Rue Du Chien Marin to do something which manifests the possible future for that site, during exactly 5 minutes.

Each month the 5-minute-visit was preceeded by a 2-hour meeting of the New ImagiNatives, a small group of people participating in bringing to light an alternative proposal for rue Du Chien Marin 5.

The New ImagiNatives were open to be joined by whoever wanted to invest his/her imagination concerning Rue Du Chien Marin 5 in a more pragmatic way. Developping a more general approach, they started a research into the neighbourhood of rue Du Flandre and map out the numerous 'empty' and 'waiting' spots. On architectural as well as political scale they invested into a proposal that would take into account not only the exemplary site on rue Du Chien Marin, but as well the needs and possibilities of this entire part of the center of Brussels.

(see agenda below)

With a choreographed lecture The New ImagiNatives put an end to their 7 months initiative during exactly 7 x 5 minutes in June 2010. The public was welcomed on the ground on rue Du Chien Marin 5 in order to celebrate their political miniature and announce its continuatiuon : an official meeting with the owner of the ground. In this meeting a possible collaboration between de developpers of this piece of land and the neigbors, students of architecture and urban space as well as interested artists and civilians will be discussed. (documentation soon !)

DO YOU HAVE 5 MINUTES was radical_hope's first experiment on performative logics. The question was how an unknown context could be 'touched' instead of observed and intervened in order to bring to life its complexity. Participation and notions of unnegotiated democracy were not to be analysed here : the interest was to work on a type of presence which allowsfor an almost unconscious and self-generated re-counting about what has been and what has happened : something that might lead to a participative visualisation of what is now desired and possible.

DO YOU HAVE 5 MINUTES was the exemplary process of radical_hope and main test-case for researching the principle of changeability and the invention of in-situ instruments for social transition in sitiations without lead. The latent question behind the beginnings of radical_hope's research of how a context can be touched from an artistic point of view without deminishing its natural complexity, was eventually developping into the harc-core issue of radical_hope's concern.

[radical_hope is a character at work, confronting us with what art does and can(not) do. The guiding question is how from an artistic point of view a context can be touched and challenged without loosing its natural complexity. The practice of radical_hope is generating in-situ instruments for social transition and respectively tries to put into action the principle of changeability : being such that alteration is possible.][more]
