ABOUT THIS SITE >>> This site is a blog as well as an archive. It gives visibility to the actual working of radical_hope, to the research project Distraction As Discipline (2016 - 2019) and the process of OTÇOE - works for passers-by, a working trajectory (2013 and 2014).

Distraction As Discipline is an investigation into enactivist principles in art and education (guided by Heike Langsdorf & Anna Luyten / research at KASK School of Arts Ghent). It considers the potential of performance art and pedagogy in general, in resisting the current and massive desubjectivation, by critically reclaiming both, attention for the moment and participation in a process.

OTÇOE - works for passers-by was the development of radical_hope's artistic practice in the city and questioned how and by whom this practice (and its personal, social and economical aspects) is perceived. The title refers to the public of a city and to how we encounter and register most things on our way through the city: Out of The Corner of Our Eyes. OTÇOE.

sitting with the body 24/7 (fall 2014) will be a group choreography, performed in a space in the centre of a city during 168 hours. Depending on the time of the day, passers-by can observe the performers at work from outside through display windows or physically join.

a friendly looking guy standing at a door
a bit like a guard
it's not a shop, it's not a club, whatever it is, it's an entrance
through windows you see people
they are busy
they seem to work

all together they look funny
serious ... but content
some sit still, others read a book sitting next to them,
some are laying on the ground feet up the wall, - it's not clear if they are sleeping or meditating or whether they are ill
they don't look like it

next to the door on the outside wall a sort of tear off calendar
flyers to take away
8 images in a row, on the first a person sitting, on the second, laying down on the floor ...
the people in the room actually DO these images ...

now some are standing blindfolded, there is a woman walking while balancing a plant on her head, - exactly like on the 3rd and 4th image
she says "haaalo"
she makes a funny face with which she excuses herself, she obviously can't chat
she needs to concentrate on balancing

an older man, sitting close to one of the windows, makes a pair of shoes
another younger man seems to cook a small portion of food
again others hang backwards over a sort of hamac
they seem to enjoy the upside down perspective
after a while they receive help with coming back onto their feet
there is one now starting to turn like a derwisj ...
a young girl in the corner concentrates on a microphone, her lips move
she is recording her own speech

all together it looks like many things
a group-meeting, a performance, a co-working space, an office, a kind of fitness studio, a kitchen and a circus school
the man at the door says
"you can go in, but you don't have to"
he greets and walks into the room himself
apparently he feels like reading a book ...
he makes himself comfortable in an armchair ...

the flyer says: sitting with the body 24/7
this means the place is busy day and night
